About Us

The Programs for Assessment of Technology in Health (PATH) Research Institute was established in 2003, led by the world renowned Bernie O’Brien, and a group of researchers, including Ron Goeree, the current Director of PATH.  PATH is based at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, but has strong affiliations with McMaster University as well.  The PATH Research Institute conducts and promotes evidence-based evaluations of the effectiveness and efficiency of new and existing health care technologies.  PATH has extensive expertise in conducting literature reviews, evidence synthesis, biostatistics, economic evaluation, costing, budget impact analysis, decision analytic modelling, policy analysis, health systems impact analysis, and techniques of research translation and knowledge uptake for new policy formation.  PATH is particularly well suited to assist program, service and policy makers, at all levels of decision making, in making difficult decisions about efficient and equitable health care resource utilization.

PATH contributes extensively to policy decision-making at both the provincial and national level and is very active in collaborative research with academia, government, clinicians and industry at the national and international level.

PATH consists of 4 core faculty members, 23 core research and administrative staff and a number of graduate students, working within four programs of research and education.

In addition, PATH enjoys close collaborative relationships with an extensive network of researchers, administrators, decision makers, health care professionals and students locally, provincially, nationally and internationally.

The Programs for Assessment of Technology in Health (PATH) Research Institute consists of multiple research programs in economic evaluation and health technology assessment (HTA).  PATH's educational and research activities are separated into 4 primary programs: the Field Evaluation and Economic Assessment Program (FEEAP); the Health Technology Assessment Program (HTAP); the Trial and Economic Modelling Methodology Program (TEMMP); and the Health Technology Assessment Educational Learning Program (HELP).  The PATH Research Institute is affiliated with the Centre for the Evaluation of Medicines (CEM) at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University.
